NTUC Club will allot S$200 million to the five-year makeover plan for Downtown East (pictured), one of Pasir Ris' famous recreational destinations.

About the size of 10 football fields, the site will be revamped to house a new Costa Sands Resort, an expanded water theme park and improved convention and meeting facilities.

The entertainment and leisure arm of NTUC said Downtown East will undergo a two-phase refurbishment, with works due to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.

The first phase of the makeover includes the construction of a new Costa Sands Resort worth S$90 million, which will extend into the space previously occupied by the Escape theme park.

The new resort will comprise 400 rooms, with 72 rooms to be ready by next year and the other 328 by 2014.

The expansion of the water theme park Wild Wild Wet into a four ha recreation feature will also be part of the first phase of works, with six new attractions added.

Meanwhile, the second phase of the refurbishment will include the addition of a convention and meeting facility to be completed in 2017. The facility will comprise a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 3,000, as well as an amphitheatre with a capacity of 1,000.

"As the aspirations of Singaporeans change, we understand that there is a need for us to update our offerings so that members and the public can continue to enjoy top-notch standards of affordable recreational facilities and leisure options," said Yeo Khee Leng, Chief Executive Officer of NTUC Club.
