SINGAPORE — The National University Hospital (NUH) is investigating the case of a heavily pregnant woman who lost her unborn baby after allegedly being left unattended for several hours.

NUH was alerted to the Facebook post of a user calling himself Mee Pok Tah. He said that his wife, who was 36 weeks pregnant, was sent via ambulance to the NUH emergency room last Tuesday (15 March) with heavy bleeding from the birth canal.

He estimated that she arrived at the hospital around 10.30pm and he received a text message about eight minutes later stating that he would receive patient updates. It is unclear if he accompanied his wife to NUH. Personal visits to hospital wards and residential care homes have been suspended since late January, except in exceptional cases, with the suspension slated to end on 3 April.

"The nurse came and only set up the monitoring device to check on my wife vital signs and left. She was left there bleeding profusely and left unattended for an estimated time of 2 hours."

He further claimed that no doctors and nurses came to check on his wife for two hours, before she was sent to the maternity ward. He received a text message that she had been moved at 12.48am. Doctors who attended to his wife then told her that no heartbeat from the unborn baby could be detected.

He questioned the time lapse before his wife was attended to.

"Isn’t losing excessive blood a life threatening situation to a person who is not pregnant, let alone a pregnant lady. This is a really unfortunate incident and I can’t stop thinking could my baby be saved if only we were attended to promptly."
