The doctor came, the doctor saw, and the doctor won. TanyaDok is the Indonesia Satellite winner.
The Indonesia Satellite saw 11 companies, 10 local and one Singaporean, pitch at the event that took place at the Energy Building in Jakarta last Saturday. The first of this year’s nine Satellites, the strong lineup of companies made it hard for the judges to select the winner. Judging and providing constructive comments to the pitching startups were David Wayne Ika from Merah Putih Incubator, David Goh from SingTel Innov8, Andi Boediman from Ideosource and e27’s CEO, Mohan Belani. The focus this year was to identify companies with solid traction, revenue models or founding team.
TanyaDok, an online health portal started by medical doctor Gregorius Bimantoro, was able to demonstrate to the judges that they had the ability to represent Indonesia at Echelon 2013, happening in June. The judges were impressed with how the team executed the idea, pulled together resources and were able to gain a significant amount of traction.
Other than the startup pitches, the Indonesia Satellite, supported by Telkomsel, also saw valuable local insights shared by keynote speakers at the event. Gaery Undarsa, co-founder of Tiket.com, shared how the team managed to build Indonesia’s most comprehensive online ticketing portal. His key message to the audience was to “Never underestimate the power of persistence and consistency,” drawing on Tiket’s hustling spirit in order to achieve what they have done.
Leontinus Edison presented on how Tokopedia overcame the challenges of setting up an e-commerce service in Indonesia to become one of Indonesia’s most promising startups. Leontinus shared the three Ts behind Tokopedia’s success – Team, Tool and Time. View his presentation slides below.
The most entertaining presentation, in my opinion, came from Anton Soeharyo of Indonesian gaming startup, Touchten. He shared how the Touchten team got their game apps million of downloads and even featured on Google Play without spending any market dollars. His tip? ASO – App Search Optimisation. Anton also shared how he took the chance in emailing Google directly in order to get their app, Train Legend, featured on Google Play. Although it took 96 emails between them, Anton shared how he persevered and managed to fulfil the necessary requirements to get featured. His other interesting share was his advice on never trusting feedback from one’s own mother, or people close to you. He said he tried it, and fired his mother, because he found that he wasn’t hearing the right, negative feedback that his team needed to build a great product. View his presentation slides below.
