Panasonic exhibits 'Sliding Nature' house at Milan Design Week

Electronics giant Panasonic has set up shop as part of the prestigious design fair Salone del Mobile with a concept installation entitled "Sliding Nature."

Designed by Torafu Architects, the appliance brand's exhibit features a traditional Japanese house-shaped structure fabricated from sliding doors that move in response to music. The doors move at times regularly and at times randomly.

The house is illuminated by 120 synchronized color-controllable LED architectural lights in the ground and first-floor corridors, and 175 LED lamps scattered throughout the yard, shining in sync with the moving doors. A further 50 surface-emitting LED lamps are suspended from the ceiling in the entrance to the corridor that surrounds the courtyard.

By combining new technologies with the culture of traditional Japanese housing, the company aims to propose a new relationship between living environments and nature. The sliding doors allow inhabitants to make the most of nature and maximize ‘passive energy management' via solar panels and heat insulation.

Salone del Mobile will run through April 13.
