Pat Sajak can’t get “Wheel of Fortune” back on track after contestants accidentally celebrate wrong answer

"Everybody's congratulating everybody, and we get to keep the money!"

Sorry, Pat Sajak, but these Wheel of Fortune contestants too busy celebrating to realize that they hadn’t actually answered the puzzle.

The trio were tasked with completing a toss-up puzzle in the phrase category during Monday night’s episode. As the letters of the timed puzzle began to fill in, Rufus Cumberlander buzzed in to finish the nearly-completed phrase, shouting, “Don’t look away!”

His fellow contestants, Cynthia King and Luidgi Altidor, seemed to fully believe that Cumberlander had correctly guessed the puzzle and began applauding and fist-bumping him. The only problem? That wasn’t the right answer.

In footage from the incident posted on YouTube, Sajak can be heard attempting to salvage the round off camera, shouting, “No! No! No! No! It’s not correct!”

By the time they realized their error, the contestants only had seconds to spare before the puzzle’s correct answer — "Can’t look away" — was revealed. In response, Altidor and King both let out surprised yells, while Cumberlander stood in between them in shock.

Sajak, of course, found humor in the situation. “Everybody’s congratulating everybody, and we get to keep the money!” He teased, fist-pumping the air in victory. Still, he noted, “It was nice of you to congratulate him.”

Viewers reacted to the well-intentioned flub in the video’s comment section. “It was at this moment...they realize they really messed up.  ROYALLY. On National TV,” one user wrote. “AND...it's gone viral.”

Others sympathized with the contestants for their early celebration, with one commenter adding, “I had the wrong answer too, so I can’t quite blame em.”

This isn't the only time that Wheel of Fortune has gone off the rail recently. Just last week, a contestant shocked viewers when he suddenly shouted out an NSFW response to a very family-friendly puzzle. Oops!
