In Photos, new Spacemob location brings similar aesthetics, hi-tech focus, to the forests of Singapore

Spacemob Ascent is located near a world-class University, high-tech research facilities and the city’s startup hub at one-north

The first Spacemob co-working space in Singapore sits in the heart of the city; a hop, skip and jump away from Orchard road, the Lion City’s shopping hub.

The company, which raised a massive US$5.5 million seed round from Vertex Ventures in November 2016, is set to begin expanding across Southeast Asia and the process has already begun in Singapore.

Spacemob recently opened its second co-working space (called Ascent) in a vastly different location.

Located near Singapore’s Science Park, it is nestled in a quiet part of the city, a short ride away from the Singapore’s startup hub in one-north. While the Orchard Road location is fantastic for its convenience and centralised location, the Ascent space provides easy access to the tech community as well as one of the city’s famous universities (National University of Singapore).

Let’s take a tour!

Meet Spacemob Ascent

The space was launched in partnership with Ascendas-Singbridge (a Singapore real estate company) and is located near the Kent Ridge MRT station.

Science Park is in a quiet part of Singapore, surrounded by thick greenery and is perfect for people (like yours truly) who spend a lot of effort to avoid large crowds.

Upon stepping into the room, visitors are greeted by a welcome desk that evokes the name ‘Spacemob’. Like the original space, the sign-in process is digital. The difference here? This desk transforms into a bar VERY easily when the the company hosts events.

Spacemob has grown its brand largely by hosting events. Anyone who has visited the space in Orchard knows the room with stadium-seating and desks in the middle. It allows for loud, collaborative work when the space is not in use, but it is often transformed into a presentation area.

The picture below is the Ascent version of the same space.

While the location is different, the core ideals are not. Spacemob is still focussed on bringing technology into the co-working experience. As the company continues to grow and expand, expect the technology to advance with it.

Cubicles are back! At least when the size of a company may range from one to five people. While open-desks are common throughout the startup world, people are starting to see the value in the cubicle (mostly, the privacy they provide).

However, these work spaces don’t have walls that tower over the employee, so they can still facilitate teamwork and cooperation.

Collaboration is still a necessity, so their are options for an open-desk work environment. While not exactly a meeting room, this desk would be useful for 2-3 employees to get a few hours of work under their belt while still facilitating communication.

The aesthetics of Spacemob ascent are similar to that of the downtown space. It has long hallways, glass walls and a wood-based furnishing. While one of the defining characteristics of the first Spacemob is the oval shape (due to the building design), the Ascent location has a more traditional interior design.

Maybe it’s just me, but this looks like the go-to place for lunch (and maybe some light work while munching away). It also looks like a place to facilitate random introductions.

“Hey, mind if I sit here?”

“Not at all.”

“So, what do you do?”

This is where the real brainstorming gets done. Welcome to the meeting room (or should we say war room?). So when you are sitting down for the next design-thinking session, this will be the place.
