UFC Fight Night in Singapore: Holly Holm knocks out Bethe Correia

Mixed martial arts promoter UFC held its Fight Night in Singapore at the Indoor Stadium on Saturday (17 June). In front of some 8,400 spectators, Holly Holm took on Bethe Correia in the main fight card. Holm won by TKO after three rounds. This is Holm’s first win since November 2015. She had been on a three-match losing streak.

The match got off to a slow start in the first round, with both women doing a lot of dodging and shadow boxing. At the end of the first round, the crowd began to boo because of the lack of action. Both women were similarly tentative in the second round – to the point that referee Marc Goddard briefly stopped the fight to warn both women to get into action.

At the beginning of round three, Holm landed a kick to Correia’s head, and Goddard ended the match a little after a minute into the round. “I know we heard a lot of boos, but what I wanted to do was make it as clean as I could,” admitted Holm, but she defended her game plan saying that she wanted to “bait [Correia] into something and make a clean shot”.
