Firecracker-making persists in PH

Pinoys are consistently discouraged from using firecrackers and enjoying do-it-your own fireworks displays, with the government launching crackdowns on factories and vendors of the merchandise the kill and injure hundreds annually.

The tradition persists, however--and so does the business of manufacturing the deadly New Year revelry explosives.

Days before the country welcomes 2013, President Benigno Aquino III ordered a crackdown on banned explosives, while hinting at stricter penalties. (Text by Kim Arveen Patria)
