Pokémon GO’s Mega Salamence just made its debut to the game on 11 January in Mega Raids with the start of the Twinkling Fantasy event, but it’s not an easy feat getting one for your Pokédex.

This elusive third-generation, Dragon-type, and Flying-type Pokémon is a great addition to your roster because it has high damage and a tough defence.

This makes Mega Salamence ideal in dealing with other Dragon-types, such as Zekrom, in raids.

How to get Mega Salamence

You probably know you can’t catch Salamence in its mega evolved form from the raid. This is because the mega-boss of raids is always catchable in its normal form.

Salamence can be caught with the following CP values:

2054 – 2142 CP no weather boost

2568 – 2678 CP boosted by Snow weather boost

To evolve your own Mega Salamence, you must first gather enough Mega Energy for the initial mega evolution.

This means you’d need to defeat more than one Mega Salamence in a raid to extract enough of its Mega Energy to do this.

To evolve a Salamence into a Mega Salamence, you will need 200 Mega Energy for the initial evolution. After that, you need 40 Mega energy for each evolution stage.

Mega evolution is free if you wait for its “cooldown” period to end. This cooldown period is reduced as your Mega Pokémon's mega level increases. You can also walk your Mega Pokémon if you have them in your Pokédex to gain more Mega energy.

How to successfully counter a Mega Salamence in a raid

To successfully counter the Mega Salamence, you'll need to employ a wide variety of types of Pokémon.

If your team members don’t have the optimal counters, you may consider bringing in a couple more of these high-level trainers.

Duos of level 40 players can beat this Pokémon if you both have a team of Ice-type Pokémon with a mega evolution to support it.

The best raid counters for the Mega Salamence would include Ice (2x weakness), Dragon, Fairy, and Rock types.

The Top 10 Pokémon counters for the Mega Salamence are:

2. Mega Abomasnow – with Powder Snow and Weather Ball

3. Mega Latios – with Dragon Breath and Dragon claw or Outrage

4. Darmanitan (Galarian Standard) – with Ice Fang and Avalanche

5. Weavile – with Ice Shard and Avalanche

6. Mamoswine – with Powder Snow and Avalanche

7. Glaceon – with Frost Breath and Avalanche

8. Charizard (Mega X) – with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw

9. Jynx – with Frost Breath and Avalanche

10. Mewtwo – with Psycho Cut and Ice Beam

You can also form a roster based on the weaknesses of the Mega Salamence. Try not to use Pokémon with Grass, Ground, Bug, Fighting, Fire, and Water attacks since the Mega Salamence is resistant to those.

At level 40, the Mega Salamence has 5031 CP; at level 50, it reaches a maximum of 5688 CP, making it a true monster. It will be one of the best Mega Dragon-type Pokémon, surpassing both the Mega Latios and Mega Latias.

This means it’ll be the strongest Pokémon until Mega Garchomp and Mega Mega Rayquaza arrive on Pokémon GO. So get on and organize Mega Raids with friends! Good luck raiding!
