Police arrest man over murder of six-year-old on remote Scottish isle

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Police have arrested a man on suspicion of the murder of a 6-year-old girl on Scotland's remote Isle of Bute, a rare crime in a community of just 6,500 people.

The body of Alesha MacPhail, who was visiting relatives on the island, was found in woodland near the town of Rothesay early on Monday morning.

"Despite this evening's major development, I am still appealing for anyone ... who may have information about Alesha's death to contact us," Detective Superintendent Stuart Houston said.

Police on Bute, 40 miles (65 km) from Glasgow off Britain's northwestern coast, have been conducting door-to-door enquiries around the island and warning residents to lock their doors.

Extra officers were brought in from the mainland to hunt for the killer and officers were patrolling 24 hours a day.
