Poly student dies after supposed allergic reaction

A polytechnic student died on Tuesday after reportedly suffering an allergic reaction to his acne medication.

18-year-old Malaysian Christopher Kok Fook Loon, 18, who was studying in Nanyang Polytechnic, died on Tuesday after allegedly developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a life-threatening skin condition as a result of an adverse reaction to medication, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Kok’s girlfriend, Jane Lim, recounted the incident on her Facebook wall and said that he had also suffered from Myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. He contracted it due to his weak immune system after developing Stevens-Johnson syndrome, the doctor told her.

Lim wrote that Kok contracted a fever on Monday last week and was feeling better after taking Panadol. But on Thursday, he appeared to have been tired and not his usual self when they went out to play basketball and football together.

Kok ended up in the emergency room of Tan Tock Seng Hospital that same night, and was later transferred to the Singapore General Hospital and put on life support. His liver and kidneys were also attacked and damaged by other viruses, said Lim.
