Are Prince William and Kate Middleton Using Zoom? An Investigation.
Prince William and Kate Middleton may be royal, but they're still human (presumably). And sometimes, they do normal human things.
They did one of those normal human things today, when, unable to visit a school in person amid the pandemic, they virtually connected with its teachers and students. But how, exactly, did they accomplish this feat? Could it really be that Will and Kate have, like almost everyone else with access to an internet-enabled device, joined Zoom?
A little sleuthing is in order. So gather 'round, fellow detectives. First, we review the evidence.
At precisely 5 p.m. EST, Kensington Palace (that would be Will and Kate's official royal office) released a set of photos—all of which appeared to be screenshots of the couple video calling with people, some wearing bunny ears, at a school. Subsequent reports, from this publication and others, confirmed this context.
Now, to look closer at the images in question. What's that in the lower left corner of both participants' screens? A username, displayed in a white sans serif font against a translucent background? Indeed! (Pardon me while I take a beat to remove my glasses, so as to underscore the importance of this discovery.) And is that a yellow border around Will and Kate's view? Most certainly! (Excuse my self-satisfied cigar puffing.)
Among all of the possible video chat applications—the most popular of which can be seen here, alongside handy screenshots—only one utilizes these telltale graphics. Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth. And the truth, almost certainly, is that Will and Kate are using Zoom.
Not only are they using Zoom, but they've gone through the process of selecting their own three-letter username: DOC. What this means, I can't be sure, though I'm guessing they're not claiming to be doctors. But what if... oh, yes! By golly, it seems likely they've abbreviated their titles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, into a handy acronym.
Even on Zoom, Will and Kate have a royal flair.
