SINGAPORE — A youth who kicked and shattered an MRT screen door while horsing around with his co-workers was sentenced to nine months’ probation on Wednesday (17 July).

Mohamad Adib Azfar Mohamad, 19, was found suitable for probation after a report was called at his past hearing. His probation report found him at a low risk of reoffending, noted District Judge Eddy Tham.

Adib’s mother was also ordered to place a $5,000 bond to ensure his good behaviour. He will also have to keep to a time curfew and serve 60 hours of community service.

DJ Tham told Adib on Wednesday to “learn to think before you act”.

“If you comply with (the conditions of your probation), not only will you have a chance to benefit from the programmes, you will also have a clean record,” said DJ Tham.

Adib pleaded guilty to one count of committing mischief earlier.

The part-time banquet helper headed to Orchard MRT station after his shift at Orchard Hotel, at around 6am on 24 September last year.

While at the platform awaiting the train with his co-workers, Adib began fooling around. In a bid to prevent a co-worker from getting onto a train, he kicked the screen door after it closed. The platform screen door shattered upon impact.

Adib immediately left the station and took a Grab taxi home. However, CCTV footage captured the incident and his identity was traced.

The door cost $3,061 to repair.

For committing mischief and causing damage of more than $500, Adib could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined.
