Queen Elizabeth's thoughts are with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as he is being treated in the intensive care unit of a London hospital for COVID-19.

"Earlier today The Queen sent a message to Carrie Symonds and to the Johnson family," Buckingham Palace said in a statement. "Her Majesty said they were in her thoughts and that she wished the Prime Minister a full and speedy recovery."

After first testing positive for the virus on March 27, Johnson was admitted to the hospital on April 5 with persistent COVID-19 symptoms; the following day, he was moved to the intensive care unit. "Over the course of [Monday] afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital," Downing Street explained in a statement.

Due to his illness, Johnson will not take part in his weekly meeting with the Queen—a standing appointment between the reigning monarch and the prime minister. However, the British monarch will be kept informed by other government officials.

"Buckingham Palace and Her Majesty the Queen have been kept regularly informed about the Prime Minister's condition and that will continue," Downing Street confirmed, per a tweet from royal reporter Lizzie Robinson. "The Cabinet Secretary and the Prime Minister's principal private secretary will continue their contacts with the Royal Household on the Prime Minister's behalf."

Although these meetings usually take place in person, the Queen and Johnson began to hold them over the telephone in late March, in order to practice social distancing.
