Residents Express Worry Over Marketplace In Apartment Carpark
Nearby residents of a 40-year old apartment building on Jalan Thamby Abdullah in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur has expressed concern over the property, saying it has turned into a health hazard.
This comes as the apartment block is littered with rubbish and has been suffering with water ponding issue – making it a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes.
A visit to the property, which is mostly occupied by foreigners, showed that the block’s carpark area on the ground floor had been transformed into a wet market, reported The Star.
In fact, goat heads and carcasses is displayed at one stall, while a cage with two live rabbits can also be seen.

A person working at the stall shared they had the necessary permit to sell mutton.
The stall had been fined several times for slaughtering chickens within the premises by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
“This is a private apartment building and not a market where slaughtering of animals should allowed,” said K. Rama, a resident who lives nearby.
“A market would have proper grease traps installed to prevent sullage from going into drains and contaminating rivers. I doubt this place has these facilities.”

Other stalls operated by foreigners sell fruits and vegetables.
Rubbish strewn on the staircases as well as corridors of the apartment’s first, second and third floors could be seen, while discarded face masks were also found in several places.
“Foreigners have been known to be slaughtering chickens here for a long time,” said a resident who wanted to be identified only as Jaya.
Residents hope DBKL would prioritise health and safety and put a stop to the illegal activities within the apartment block.
“All licences should be displayed like how it is done in Putrajaya…Illegal and dirty operators should be closed for good,” said resident Cynthia Hor.
A DBKL spokesperson said it will look into the issue and take action if it found the reports to be true.
