Rumbaka ousts China's Du Pengyu in Indonesian Open

Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia plays a return against Du Pengyu (R) of China during their Indonesia Open men's singles badminton match in Jakarta on June 14, 2013. Rumbaka beat Du 21-15, 15-21, 21-9

Unseeded Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka ousted third seed Chinese player Du Pengyu in the quarter-final of the Indonesia Open Super Series in Jakarta on Friday. Rumbaka's home victory against Du left China with no representatives in the men's singles group of the tournament. The Indonesia Open runs until Sunday in Jakarta with prize money of $700,000 across all categories. In a 55-minute match at Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, the 24th-ranked Rumbaka hit a stream of smashes and played a solid defence against the world's number three Du, in three sets that ended with a 21-15, 15-21, 21-9. "I did not play very well today, while Hayom was outstanding out there, with his strong smashes and defence," Du said. "It is normal in every tournament, there are wins and losses," he added. Content with the result, the underdog Rumbaka said: "I never expected to win this easily. Compared to previous two matches against him, this was pretty easy." China's only men's doubles pair Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng suffered a 21-18, 21-13 loss to Indonesians Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
