If you receive a phone call from a so-called Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) officer asking you to transfer money to an unknown bank account, ignore it.

In a warning issued on Wednesday (7 February), the IRAS warned members of the public of a scam involving callers masquerading their officers.

These scammers would tell their victims to pay their outstanding taxes immediately by transferring cash to unknown bank accounts, said the authority.

Reports have been made about victims receiving such calls from at least two numbers, including the IRAS’ own income tax helpline – 63568300 – and 6688867.

“IRAS will not ask you to make a payment to a third party’s bank account through a telephone call. IRAS also does not offer payment options by iTunes credits or Steam credits,” said the IRAS.

The authority also advised members of the public to ignore such calls and to lodge police reports if they have fallen victim to such frauds.
