SEA GAMES: Singapore's Yu Shuran wins gold in figure skating

Singapore figure skater Yu Shuran has won Singapore’s first winter sports gold at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The 17-year-old came out tops in the figure skating competition at Empire City, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (27 Aug). Speaking to Yahoo News Singapore after the event, she said, “I’m so happy. This moment is everything. To be able to skate around the rink with the flag, and to share it with my teammate and to hear the national anthem and stand on top of the podium, it’s such a great feeling.”

Fellow Singaporean Chloe Ing took silver to make it a 1-2 finish, while Filipino Alisson Krystle Perticheto took the bronze.

Before her routine Yu was spotted covering her ears just as the previous competitor’s score was announced. When asked why she did that, Yu replied, “I just don’t want anything to affect me. I don’t like to watch my competitors, I just don’t want to hear the score just in case it affected me mentally. I ended up kind of hearing it anyway so that didn’t work that well, but it’s okay,” she said with a laugh.

This is the first time winter sports – namely ice skating, short speed track skating and ice hockey – have been included in the SEA Games. Singapore’s ice hockey team placed fourth out of five teams on Thursday.
