Second Malaysian arrested for helping couple behind luxury goods scam flee Singapore
SINGAPORE — A second Malaysian man has been arrested over his role in helping a couple behind a $32 million luxury goods scam flee Singapore.
The 38-year-old Malaysian allegedly conspired with his compatriot Mohamed Alias, 40, to help 26-year-old Singaporean man Pi Jiapeng and his 27-year-old Thai wife, Pansuk Siriwipa escape in a lorry. He was arrested on Friday (29 July) in Malaysia, the Singapore police said.
The police said the Royal Malaysia Police had extended “strong co-operation and assistance” in arresting the man, who will be charged on Saturday.
On 15 July, Mohamed Alias, who was the lorry driver, was charged for his alleged role in the escape.
If convicted, both Malaysians face a jail term of up to two years and a maximum fine of $6,000 each.
Pi and Pansuk, who had fled by hiding in a container compartment of the lorry on 4 July, have been listed in Interpol notices since last week. Pi faces one count of criminal conspiracy to commit cheating and dishonestly inducing a delivery of property while Pansuk faces two similar counts.
At least 180 reports have been lodged with Singapore police since June against two companies, Tradenation and Tradeluxury, which the couple are associated with. Their victims claimed that they made payments for luxury watches or bags to the companies, which then failed to deliver the goods.
