Mention the Japanese city Hiroshima and most people would think of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that took place during World War II. Now that decades have passed, and grudges likely dissipated, travellers who are looking to visit Hiroshima can hop aboard a SilkAir plane at the end of October this year at Singapore Changi Airport.

Operated by SilkAir, Singapore Airlines' regional wing, the Singapore-Hiroshima route will begin on 30 October 2017. This will be a non-stop service, so extra brownie points for convenience and time saved!

Subject to regulatory approvals, SilkAir will operate the Singapore-Hiroshima route 3 times weekly on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The flights to and from Hiroshima will be flown on SilkAir's Boeing 737-800 aircraft that offers Economy and Business Class cabins.

At the moment, SilkAir is the only airline to offer direct flights between Singapore and Hiroshima. Other carriers that service the Singapore-Hiroshima route include a stopover: Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, and All Nippon Airways connect the two cities via Tokyo; China Airlines has a stopover in Taipei; China Eastern connects the two cities through Shanghai.

Here are the planned flight schedules for the route:

Flight MI868: Singapore to Hiroshima; departs Singapore at 01:45, arrives in Hiroshima at 09:30

Flight MI867: Hiroshima to Singapore; departs Hiroshima at 10:25, arrives in Singapore at 15:40

All schedules are in local times. Subject to regulatory approvals, the return flights will take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

With the addition of Hiroshima in SilkAir and Singapore Airlines' combined network, travellers in Singapore who are looking to visit Japan have an assortment of cities to pick from, including Tokyo, Fukuoka, Nagoya, Osaka, and soon Hiroshima.

For those who aren't so familiar with SilkAir, know that although it is Singapore Airlines' subsidiary, this carrier is a full-service airline. So, flyers will have access to onboard meals, wireless in-flight entertainment, baggage allowance of 30kg for Economy travellers and 40kg for Business Class travellers, through check-in convenience if travellers are connecting to or from another SilkAir (or Singapore Airlines) point via Singapore.

What Does Hiroshima Have To Offer?

While less popular than other Japanese cities the likes of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Sapporo, Hiroshima is a great destination for history buffs for its home to two World Heritage Sites: the A-Bomb Dome of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial; and the Itsukushima Shrine. Travellers who are big on culture and heritage got to check out Onomichi, a quaint seaport town that's bursting with ancient Japanese heritage and lots of cultural sites.

Boasting great weather, it doesn't hurt if one explores and experiences Hiroshima and its nearby islands and villages on a trusty bicycle. For that, you'd have to weave through a 60km long toll road between Honshu and Shikoku. A huge fan of sake? Head over to Sajio, a well-known sake town, to experience the city's distinctive sake.
