SINGAPORE — Flight operations at the Singapore Flyer remained suspended more than a week after its management announced that they detected a “minor technical issue”.

A spokesperson for the attraction told Yahoo News Singapore late Tuesday (26 November) that the suspension was a precautionary measure following the detection of a technical issue involving one of the spoke cables a week before.

“We are carrying out the necessary inspection, repairs and rectification works and will work closely with the Building and Construction Authority for their review before the ride is open to the public,” said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson did not respond to Yahoo News Singapore’s query on when the suspension would be lifted.

During the suspension, shops and restaurants at the Singapore Flyer’s Terminal Building remain open.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our guests and business partners,” added the spokesperson.

Affected guests with prior flight bookings can contact the Singapore Flyer’s customer service at 6333 3311 from 9am to 10pm for assistance. Members of the public can receive updates about the situation on its official website and social media platforms.

The suspension was not the first such incident under Straco Leisure, which took over ownership of the Flyer in November 2014. In January last year, the attraction suspended flight operations for days due to an “unexpected incident”.

On 4 December 2008, under previous owner Singapore Flyer, about 70 passengers were left stranded for almost five hours on the ride due to bad weather. At the time, the attraction had been operating for about eight months.

According to its Facebook page, the 165m tall attraction is the largest giant observation wheel in Asia.
