Singapore's Apple Orchard Road store opens

Apple opened its first Southeast-Asian store along Singapore’s Orchard Road at 10 am on Saturday (27 May), welcoming a long line of eager customers to its two-storey outlet. According to Channel NewsAsia, more than 200 people were said to have queued at the entrance of the outlet. The first person in the queue was 25-year-old Xiang Jiaxin, who is Chinese National working in Macau, according to AFP. The report added that he had queued for more than 12 hours overnight, and had made sure that his holiday in Singapore would coincide with the store opening. Located at Knightsbridge Mall, the store’s first customers were greeted by several Apple staff - donned in purple t-shirts emblazoned with the iconic logo - who were at several spots within the store, including the entrance and exit. Opening hours of the outlet will be from Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 10pm. A series of programmes have already been lined up for the venue, including a performance by Singaporean singer Sezairi on its opening day from 5pm to 6.30pm, a street photography workshop by Singaporean photographer Aik Beng Chia on 28 May from 11am to 12.30pm and a movie-making session for kids on 31 May from 10am to 11am. A separate 90-minute photography workshop and a session on how to use the Apple watch will also be taking place on 28 May. Apple Orchard Road’s operations has been said to be powered by solar energy provided by Singapore-based provider Sunseap Group. The opening date of the store was revealed on 17 May, just two weeks after the company revealed the name Apple Orchard Road. Reporting by Nurul Azliah Aripin.
