'Snow Queen' Shiffrin wins fourth Zagreb slalom

Ski queen: Mikaela Shiffrin celebrates her victory on Saturday

American star Mikaela Shiffrin won the World Cup slalom in Zagreb for a fourth time on Saturday with her main rival Petra Vlhova second again. Shiffrin completed the two runs in 2min 01.09sec while Vlhova was second with a combined time of 2:02.34sec. Wendy Holdener of Switzerland, who was second after the first run, finished third, 1.75sec behind Shiffrin. It was the fourth time the 23-year-old reigning World Cup champion won the Zagreb event, including last year. The victory came after Vlhova beat her in parallel slalom in Oslo on Tuesday. Shiffrin's last win was in the slalom in Semmering, Austria, on December 29, a record 15th World Cup triumph in a year. Zagreb win was Shiffrin's 52nd in the World Cup and the 37th in slalom. The American is dominating the overall standings with 1,214 points. Vlhova and Holdener hold second and third place with 748 and 514 points respectively. In the slalom rankings tbe situation is similar with Shiffrin leading with 100 points ahead of Vlhova. Holdener, 25, is on the third place with 375 points. "I had in my mind to be really focused and really aggressive," Shiffrin said. "I was trying to take advantage of this very good surface ... I've been really precise," she added. Zagreb's women slalom is dubbed the 'Snow Queen Trophy' in honour of Croatia's retired skiing star Janica Kostelic. The event was held at Sljeme, the mountain peak overlooking Zagreb where the Kostelic and her brother Ivica Kostelic, a former World Cup winner, made their skiing debuts. The race winner also receives a crystal crown. "I'm really happy ... today was a good race. I like when it's icy, I use my power," Vlhova told reporters. "In the second run it was really a big fight with time," said the 23-year-old Slovak who had better time in the second run than Shiffrin. The American also praised her main rival stressing tha "Petra is taking her skiing to a different level." The men's slalom event is due on Sunday with the first race starting at 1115 GMT.
