Major Bennington star Neal McDonough has said Sonic the Hedgehog's original design for the blue speedster was "fine".

Fans will still be emotionally scarred by what they saw in the movie's first trailer – a "monstrosity" according to one tweet – but it sounds like McDonough never saw any reason to delay Sonic's release and give the character a more authentic look.

Attending the recent FAN EXPO in Vancouver, McDonough told ComicBook: "What I saw in the trailer, the first trailer, I thought it was fine," before admitting the finished product "was amazing".

In the same interview, he also shared why he thinks the movie has proven so popular with cinemagoers.

"There was a little something for everyone – there were adult jokes that would sneak in there that we'd get, and the kids wouldn't get, [and] there would be jokes that the kids would be getting that we as adults generally wouldn't necessarily get – so it was a little bit for everyone.

"And I think what they did with Sonic, he looked so great, it was a throwback to what the game was and I think they really nailed it. I think that's why it's the number one movie on the planet right now," he added.

Weighing in on the possibility of a sequel, McDonough joked about Dwayne Johnson having a cameo role: "Literally, part two, I've already heard rumblings that The Rock is going to be [in it]. The Rock is in part two of everything, by the way."

Sonic the Hedgehog is in cinemas now.
