Boston Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry has emerged as a serious candidate for the University of Massachusetts coaching job, league sources told The Vertical.

Shrewsberry has interviewed with UMass officials about the opening and is expected to be granted a second meeting soon, sources said.

Shrewsberry, 40, has worked on coach Brad Stevens’ staffs with the Celtics and at Butler University. Shrewsberry has had stops at Purdue, Marshall and spent two seasons as the head coach at Indiana University-South Bend.

UMass fired coach Derek Kellogg following the Minutemen’s exit from the Atlantic 10 Tournament this month.
