Sources: Lakers signing David Nwaba to two-year deal
The Lakers are signing David Nwaba to a two-year contract, league sources told The Vertical. Nwaba’s second 10-day contract expired Tuesday, and the two sides agreed to a deal covering the remainder of this season with a team option for 2017-18, league sources said.
Nwaba, a 6-foot-4 guard, has intrigued the Lakers’ front office because of his defensive ability and athleticism. The Lakers opened a roster spot at the trade deadline and called up Nwaba from their NBA Development League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
“What’s great about David is he’s not scared of any challenge,” Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters Monday. “He’s never overwhelmed by the situation, which is very impressive for someone of his circumstance.”
In 10 games (two starts) for the Lakers, Nwaba, 24, has averaged 14.4 minutes, 3.6 points and two rebounds.
Nwaba is joining his hometown Lakers after collegiate stops at Division II Hawaii Pacific and Santa Monica College before transferring to finish his career at Cal Poly.
He wasn’t selected in the 2016 NBA draft.
