Street Fighter 6's Capcom Cup champion will win US$1 million

Japanese gaming giant Capcom announced on Monday (20 February) that they will be celebrating the highly-anticipated release of Street Fighter 6 by increasing the prize pool for Capcom Cup X to over US$2 million, with the champion claiming a whopping US$1 million.

The Capcom Cup is the culminating event of the Capcom Pro Tour, Street Fighter's annual esports circuit sponsored by Capcom.

Following the conclusion of Capcom Cup IX, Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto made the landmark announcement in a special presentation where he also revealed that the 2023 Capcom Pro Tour will begin this Summer and will be played on Street Fighter 6.

"To celebrate the launch of Street Fighter 6, we are supporting Capcom Cup X with the grand prize of US$1 million and a total prize pool of over US$2 million," a translation of Tsujimoto's announcement said.

"The next season of the Capcom Pro Tour will be played fully on Street Fighter 6. We hope you can help make this season as exciting as possible."

Street Fighter 6 is set to be released on 2 June.

Capcom Cup X's US$2 million prize pool will be the biggest prize pool by far not just in Street Fighter, but in the entire fighting games scene. For comparison, Capcom Cup IX had a US$298,500 prize pool while the Tekken World Tour Finals 2022 had a US$100,000 pot.

Capcom Cup X will also be one of only a handful of esports tournaments where an individual player takes home US$1 million in winnings. While many events have featured grand prizes of at least US$ 1 million, these were in team-based titles that split the winnings among multiple players.

The International (TI), Dota 2's annual world championship tournament, and the 2019 Fortnite World Cup have been the only esports events thus far where the winners won at least US$ 1 million.

The winning teams of the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 iterations of TI all won at least US$10 million, which meant that each player on those five-man teams had a cut of at least US$1 million.

TI10 in 2021 boasts the biggest prize pool in all of esports with a whopping US$40 million pot, with TI10 champions Team Spirit claiming the grand prize of US$18 million.

If Team Spirit's winnings were split five-ways, each player would have claimed at least US$3.6 million in winnings. With that said, the organisation, coach, and other support staff would have also taken a cut of the prize, though it's likely that Team Spirit's players still took home at least US$3 million.

Meanwhile, the winners of the Solo and Duo competitions of the 2019 Fortnite World Cup won US$3 million.

Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf pocketed US$3 million as the event's Solo champion while David "Aqua" Wang and Emil "Nyhrox" Bergquist Pedersen each had US$1.5 million as the Duo champions. The Top 4 players of the Solo competition notably won at least US$1 million as well.
