Michael Pitt to play villain in "Ghost in the Shell"

5 Feb – Michael Pitt will be joining the cast of the highly-anticipated American action crime film "Ghost in the Shell", based on the popular Japanese manga of the same name – playing the villain role opposite Scarlett Johansson.

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that the 34-year-old actor is in talks to play a villain character known as The Laughing Man, an expert hacker who is capable of hiding his identity from all digital images including peoples' cybernetic eyes, with an animated logo over his face.

Directed by Rupert Sanders and produced by DreamWorks, the shooting of the film is scheduled to start in late February in New Zealand.

The story follows a female special ops cyborg (Johansson) who leads task force named Section 9, that deals with dangerous criminals and extremists.

Pilou Asbæk is also in the cast, playing the role of Batou, one of the best melee fighters in Section 9.

"Ghost in the Shell" is slated for a U.S. release on 31 March 2017.
