Tap-to-pay coming to Japan's next iPhones

The next iPhones in Japan will include the FeliCa chip's tap-to-pay system

Taking public transportation in Japan just got a little easier, as future iPhones look set to include FeliCa technology, a mobile tap-to-pay system, reports Bloomberg.

The FeliCa chip, developed by Sony, will allow users in Japan to store their train and bus passes on their iPhones. Instead of using traditional transit cards, users will be able to tap their phones against the scanners at transport turnstiles.

The FeliCa chip can process a transaction in 0.1 seconds and can also store e-money, a type of electric currency that has become widely accepted at vending machines, cafes and convenience stores in Japan.

Apple plans to launch the new feature in its next iPhone models, to be unveiled in September, which looks to give the company a further boost. Already, Japan represents 8 percent of the company's total revenue.
