There’s Something Important Missing From These Avengers: Age of Ultron DVD Covers
‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ may still be showing in your local cinema, but the Marvel marketing machine is already thinking ahead to the home entertainment release next month.
However, there’s something not quite right about the cover art for the DVD and 3D Blu-ray versions of the film. Can you spot it?
That’s right, as The Mary Sue points out, none of the female characters made it to the cover art. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, and Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill have all been omitted in favour of Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and on the 3D cover, the film’s villain Ultron.

Yes, they’re the core Avengers, and you could argue that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver could also equally aggrieved that they didn’t make the cover, but the lack of ANY females on the cover seems a bit misjudged.
Thankfully the non-3D Blu-ray cover manages to squeeze Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Vision on, but it seems like lip-service for a film that has faced accusations of sexism.
Joss Whedon quit Twitter when ‘Age of Ultron’ was released earlier this year after being attacked online by disgruntled Black Widow fans. They were disappointed with the film’s treatment of the only female Avenger who in the course of the movie was “shipped” with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and had to be rescued from the clutches of the film’s robot villain.
Add to that the whole Jeremy Renner calling Black Widow a slut debacle and you’ve got a movie that’s already skating on thin ice when it comes to gender politics.
‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is coming to DVD, Blu-Ray and 3D Blu-ray on 14 September.
