Deadline reports that Doug Liman, who directed Cruise in the movies American Made and Edge of Tomorrow, is planning to re-team with the actor for the project.
According to the report, the actor and the director came up with the idea for the space movie together, with Liman writing the first draft of the screenplay and producing along with Cruise.
Very few details have been revealed about the project so far, but Cruise is said to be working alongside Elon Musk's Space X and NASA.
It's also been reported that the film will not be a part of the Mission: Impossible franchise and there's no studio attached to it yet.
Meanwhile, with worldwide film production currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 have both been delayed after M:I7 became one of the first films to postpone production when it stopped filming in Venice back in February.
