Top 5 Korean Restaurants in Desa Sri Hartamas

Ganggangsullae

Ganggangsullae is a traditional Korean dance that’s 5,000 years old exclusively performed by women to bring about a bountiful harvest. This place however, is a great place for Korean BBQ and definitely doesn’t scrimp on the banchan (side dishes).

BBQ heaven is up those steps between Bestari and 7 Eleven

There were nine refillable (for free!) dishes of banchan with the always present dish of kimchi which was just slightly fermented and was a perfect mix of spicy, savoury with just a slightly sour hint.

All of this and free refillables!

To go with the banchan, order up the soondubu jjigae (soft tofu stew, RM20) that’s made with super soft and silky tofu, pork, sliced cucumbers, onions, their signature gochujang (red pepper paste) and two eggs – all in one bubbling black stone pot.

With all that protein, this’ll be perfect for after the gym

For a “healthier” alternative, their dolsot bibimbap (hot stone bowl mixed rice, RM25) is made with fresh lettuce, mixed shredded vegetables (carrots, cucumbers), roasted seaweed, and a raw egg on top of a bed of warm rice. Gochujang is mixed into the rice and vegetables and this is where you enjoy the sound of your food sizzling.

Sizzling, scrumptious, and super with soju

No trip to a Korean BBQ place is complete without samgyeopsal (RM27) which the restaurant will grill for you on a bed of grilled onions and garlic. This goes with lettuce wraps, sliced peppers, doenjang (fermented soy bean paste) and rock salt in oil to dip the meat in.

Just look at how the meat is perfectly browned

Well, since this is three parts vegetable to one part meat, this is totally super healthy, right?

Lee’s Korean Specialty Restaurant

This Korean restaurant puts a twist on most Korean restaurants by featuring North Korean cuisine. Mr. Lee’s restaurant features a simple menu with different types of nengmyun (cold noodles), soup dishes served with rice and other favourites like mung bean pancakes.

Its simple exterior reflects its menu

As if the weather knew we were visiting Lee’s, it was a blazing hot afternoon and was recommended the bibim nengmyun (cold mixed noodles) with hot broth made with a soy sauce base served on the side. Surprisingly, nengmyun is a winter dish but during that crazy hot afternoon, this dish was a life saviour.

A cool, spicy, sweet, and savoury respite from the heat

Bibim nengmyun (RM20.90) is made with cold buckwheat noodles, shredded cucumber, and bell peppers, slivers of pickled radish and some more on the side to add, slices of sweet Korean pear and a dressing of gochujang, sesame oil, and soy sauce.

Freshness in the bowl right there

According to Mr. Lee, the owner of the restaurant, you drink a cup of the savoury hot broth with every mouthful of noodles to wash it down.

Wow Chicken

What’s a Korean food experience if there’s no fried chicken? Wow Chicken brings the Korean fried chicken phenomenon to Desa Sri Hartamas but they serve other eats as well.

The doorway to Korean supper

Banchan here came in the form of pickled cubes of radish and coleslaw which did great as palate cleansers. We got their kimchi ramen set (RM18) that came with kimchi, radish kimchi, fishcakes and rice. The ramen was made a bit too watery but eating that with the kimchi made up for the lack of flavour.

So simple you could make it at home

The pièce of resistance was their spicy Korean fried chicken (RM25). Drenched in their spicy sauce made with sweet chilli sauce and sliced bird’s eye chilli, the battered and deep-fried chicken would go well with an ice cold pint.

Crunch in every bite and spicy to the end

Dae Sa Kwan

Dae Sa Kwan is under the same owner as Lee’s Korean Specialty Restaurant, so quality is assured. This restaurant features the usual South Korean delicacies and the weather was in our favour again where it was pouring cats and dogs so we decided to get some samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup).

Before the storm arrived

They have the usual banchan which featured two types of kimchi and quail eggs! The samgyetang (RM38) came in a huge pot which we suspect was meant to be shared because bowls and a ladle were brought to the table as well.

Can you believe there’s a whole chicken in there?

Made with ginseng, a small chicken, garlic, rice stuffed into the chicken and jujubes, this dish is typically served during hot summer days but on that rainy night, this kept us warm and fuzzy. Boiled until the meat was falling off the chicken bones, the soup was sweet, savoury but didn’t have any herbal smell whatsoever.

Buldojang

Buldojang (which translates to Buddha jumps over the wall) is a Korean-Chinese restaurant that serves Chinese food with a Korean twist. Their banchan came with the usual kimchi, pickled radish and cucumbers and something different with the raw onion and dipping sauce that tasted just like rojak sauce!

One person’s worth of banchan

We got the jajangmyeon (RM18) in the regular size and was wowed by how big the portion was. Made with thick sauce made of black soybean paste, diced pork, lots of sliced onions and wheat noodles. This sweet and savoury dish was more than enough for one person due to it being laden with so much starch.

So filling, so good and so affordable

If you’re carbo loading for an upcoming marathon, try this for your next meal for a change and you’ll definitely be satisfied.
