Two cars catch fire on AYE, ECP

One car caught fire on East Coast Parkway (ECP) and another on the Ayer-Rajah Expressway (AYE) in separate incidents on Thursday.

In the first fire, a car burst into flames along the ECP towards Changi Airport near the Bayshore Road exit around 7am, leaving the driver with mild injuries.

A spokesman for the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said fire vehicles were sent to put out the fire.

The car’s driver, who sustained abrasions on his chin and forearm, was sent by ambulance to Changi General Hospital.

The second incident occurred along the AYE towards Tuas near the Jurong Pier Road exit later in the day around noon.

SCDF personnel extinguished the fire within 10 minutes, and no injuries were reported.

SCDF has issued an advisory on preventing and handling vehicle fires:

  1. Primary causes of vehicle fires are due to ignition sources like overheating and electrical faults within the engine compartment.

  2. Equip your vehicle with a fire extinguisher. A step by step guide on how to operate an extinguisher is available at http://www.scdf.gov.sg/content/scdf_internet/en/community-and-volunteers/publications.html

  3. If a fire or smoke is detected, pull over safely to the side of the road, turn off the ignition and evacuate from the vehicle.
