UK coronavirus death toll rises by 786 in last 24 hours to 6,159

More than 6,100 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus - an increase of 786 in 24 hours.

The number of people who have officially contracted the virus rose to 55,242 on Tuesday, the Department of Health and Social Care said.

The death toll for hospitalised patients stood at 6,159 as of 5pm on Monday.

Around 14,000 tests were done on 6 April, the health ministry said.

In total, more than 213,000 people have been tested to date, according to the latest figures.
