Yati Narsinghanand, the chief mahant of the temple, was sleeping in his room when the incident took place.

Nareshanand Saraswati had come to Dasna from Samastipur in Bihar on August 7. A disciple of Mahant Yati Narasimhanand he had come to Ghaziabad to attend a function.

Yati Narasimhanand Saraswati had received several death threats in the past, hence a team of Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) was stationed outside the temple for protection. In its defence, the police claims the victim was sleeping outside and not in his room, which exposed him to the grisly attack.
