Vendee Globe skippers set to sail around the world
The iconic Vendee Globe solo yacht race
will set off from France on November 8
33 skippers will circumnavigate the world
for between 70 and 100 days
across 21,638 nautical miles
19 boats are equipped with foiling
a 'wing submarine' innovation
that makes the boat "fly" above the sea and increases speed
This year's race will also see six women compete
(SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH SKIPPER CLARISSE CREMER SAYING:
"I think it's super positive. We need examples of women who have the chance to participate in these great sports and human adventures. And I'm proud to imagine that maybe other women could identify with me so they can one day compete with me."
Extra safety measures will be in place
including a seven-day lockdown
which means no hugs goodbye on launch day
(SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH SKIPPER CLARISSE CREMER SAYING:
"What's different this time round is that the Vendee Globe usually is a great party, it's a huge event with lots of people. We all have in mind the Vendee Globe's departure in the Sables d'Olonne channel with a lot of people, with lots of hugging with the family and so on. But we will be isolated one week before it at least, I will not be able to say goodbye to my relatives, it gives me shivers just talking about it. It's weird to leave on a solo round the world tour without being able to hold your mum in your arms."
