Vertical “kampung” to rise next to Yew Tee MRT station in 2026
The development will be modelled after Kampung Admiralty, with housing and facilities for seniors, including a community club, a polyclinic and a kidney dialysis centre.
The north-western part Singapore will be the site for a vertical “kampung”, having flats for the elderly and facilities such as a dialysis centre and a polyclinic, reported The New Paper.
Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong revealed that the property will be built next to the Yew Tee MRT station and will be completed by the second half of 2026.
He said that it will be located at what is currently a hard court, with an area of around 7,000 sq m (75,347 sq ft) and is modelled after Kampung Admiralty.
“It will have two-room flexi flats for seniors, just like Kampung Admiralty. It will have a community club, it will have a polyclinic and a kidney dialysis centre. Most importantly, because of your feedback and requests, it will have a hawker centre as well,” Wong added.
Kampung Admiralty was the first HDB project to co-locate senior and childcare services under one development.
This new project is, in fact, a part of a broader effort to rejuvenate Yew Tee and Choa Chu Kang.
The Yew Tee integrated development will be tackled by the Housing Board together along with the National Environment Agency, People’s Association and Ministry of Health.
On the other hand, there are plans to build Choa Chu Kang’s first hawker centre and to create a “Green Spine” below the Yew Tee MRT viaduct, which will connect residents to from Keat Hong to Limbang to Yew Tee.
Additionally, Limbang Park , Yew Tee Park, and Stagmont Park will be given more family-friendly spaces while the Choa Chu Kang Sports Centre is undergoing redevelopment.
Experts noted that the concept of having community services and housing under one roof is one that should be replicated in Singapore’s ageing society moving forward.
Peh Kim Choo, chief executive officer of Tsao Foundation, believes the success of the Kampung Admiralty project sets a precedent for other projects catering to the elderly.
As the population of Singapore ages, there will be “room for its replication”.
