Video of PMD, e-bike riders on Sheares Avenue sparks police probe, 10 arrested

SINGAPORE — Ten people aged between 16 and 25 have been arrested for allegedly riding dangerously along Sheares Avenue.

In a news release on Monday (3 August), police said they were alerted on 13 July to a video showing a group of personal mobility device (PMD) and power assisted bicycle (PAB) riders along with a motorcyclist travelling along Sheares Avenue towards the Benjamin Sheares Bridge.

Through investigations, the suspects – eight men and two women – were arrested between 17 and 20 July. Two PMDs, device parts from a PAB, and mobile phones were seized in the process.

In a video posted on the SG Road Vigilante – SGRV Facebook page, a group of men and women are seen riding their PMDs and PABs along major roads at night, including Sheares Avenue. The video ends with the group sitting around at an open space.

The suspects are now being investigated by the police and Land Transport Authority over offences of dangerous riding and riding a PMD on a road, amongst others, said the police.

A person who is convicted of dangerous riding faces a possible jail term of up to a year, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.

On the offence of riding a PMD on a road, a convicted person faces a jail term of up to three months, a fine of up to $2,000, or both. The penalty for repeat offenders is a jail term of six months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
