Detroit Teachers Stage Sick-Out Over Pay Issues

Hundreds of Detroit teachers on sick-out over pay issues marched around the public school’s administrative building on Monday, May 2.

School district emergency manager Judge Steven Rhodes told the union over the weekend that if state lawmakers do not pass funding, the district would not be able to pay the teachers after June 30. Summer school and extended special education services would also be canceled if the funding is not approved.

Nearly all of Detroit’s schools remained shut on Monday as teachers marched through the streets calling for a financial audit of the school district. They also carried signs and chanted, “no pay, no work.”

Rhodes held a press conference Monday, urging lawmakers to pass the funding promptly. Additionally, he called on teachers, students and parents to put pressure on state officials to pass the funding. Credit: Instagram/mwallystyle
