Istanbul Protest Marks Sixth Anniversary of Xinjiang Riots

Protesters rallied outside the Chinese consulate in Istanbul on Sunday, July 5, to mark the sixth anniversary of the deadly riots in China’s Xinjiang province (known in Turkey as East Turkestan) during which at least 197 people were killed and hundreds injured. Sunday’s protesters carried anti-Chinese banners, waved the East Turkestan flag and set fire to Chinese flags.

The protest prompted China’s National Tourism Administration to issue a warning to Chinese nationals in Turkey to be aware and alert, and to avoid the protests and going out alone. Credit: Instagram/Nur Yuksel
