'Watch Dogs 2' promises a bright future for the franchise

A still from forthcoming game Watch Dogs 2

The first trailers and official background for the Ubisoft title shows that the action has moved to San Francisco and that this time, the company has put a likeable protagonist front and center.

In "Watch Dogs 2" a young hacker, Marcus Holloway must uncover evidence of vote rigging during an election campaign, and the only way to do so is to break into a congressman's penthouse.

As well as opening up the geographical and metrological scope -- the game takes in much of sun-kissed LA, the overriding aim of the game is the greater good, rather than old-fashioned revenge -- in fact it will be possible to complete the game, when it launches, without clocking up any level of body count.

However, the game keeps the action sequences and enables players to ‘hack' even more of the digitised world -- from cars and drones to 3D printing a solution -- in which the campaign unfolds.
