Hospital workers' cars wrecked after flooding following torrential rain in Scotland

Shocked hospital workers finished their shift to find their vehicles underwater when the staff car park at a Scottish hospital flooded after torrential rain.

Cars parked at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, were left submerged, with some even floating away, after Scotland was hit by thunderstorms.

The vehicles are said to have suffered extensive damage after gallons of water flooded into the car park.

Thunderstorms have battered parts of Britain amid record-breaking hot weather, leaving some areas at risk of flooding and others witnessing spectacular lightning shows.

NHS Fife chief executive Carol Potter said the hospital itself was still operating as normal but two of its car parks were out of action as a result of the flooding.

In a statement shared on Twitter she said: "My heart goes out to those staff and patients who have returned to find their vehicles damaged following flooding as a result of last night’s thunderstorms.

“Our resilience team along with colleagues in Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue have been working throughout the night to help those affected and we've been overwhelmed by offers of support from local companies to help staff get safely home after their night-shift.

She added: “The Vic is still operating as normal with Car Parks A & B out of action, this will impact on parking availability across our site. I'm encouraging colleagues who can work from home today to do so and those who have to travel in to consider car sharing or public transport.

“This will help ensure some car parking capacity for those patients attending hospital today.”
