Weekend guide (13-15 July): Cat festival, orchid display, short film showcase

Singapore Cat Festival

This inaugural festival will bring together cat owners, lover and enthusiasts to celebrate the joys of having feline friends. It will feature local and international cat product vendors, talks, sharing sessions and workshops. Supported by the Cat Welfare Society of Singapore, the festival aims to educate prospective cat owners as well as the public on the importance of responsible cat ownership and care.

Orchid Extravaganza at Gardens by the Bay

Award-winning filmmaker Royston Tan will apply his creative touch to a display of more than 14,000 orchids from over 120 varieties. Held in conjunction with the Singapore Garden Festival, the display celebrates Singapore’s diverse cultures against a backdrop of Peranakan shophouses. Visitors can view a showcase of prized orchids from the SOGA Orchid Show 2018 for a limited period between 21 July and 29 July.

KidZania Go!

Let your children assume different roles through this experiential play. The activities include learning the basics functions of a DSLR camera at a Canon photography workshop and conducting posture screenings at a chiropractor workshop. Changi Airport shoppers can redeem one-role play activity if they spend a minimum of $30 in a single receipt. For Changi Rewards members, they are entitled to one additional role-play activity.

Singapore Shorts

Overseen by a panel of professionals across Singapore’s film industry, this annual showcase celebrates the best in local short films. The films include a restored version of Rajendra Gour’s 1972 Sunshine Singapore, Eric Khoo’s Home VDO, and Giovanni Fantoni Modena’s Artificial Melodrama. The event will also feature discussions with the filmmakers as well as a section on older titles from the Asian Film Archive’s collection.

SAM Late Nights

Head down to the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and enjoy live poetry reading sessions, casual artwork discussions and live music performance by local musical act ARNT. Visitors can also enjoy a guide by the curators of the museum through its latest exhibition, “Imaginarium: Into the Space of Time” and discuss the artworks on display. Complimentary late night access to the museum will be offered to visitors.

Singapore Food Festival

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the food festival will showcase the country’s rich culinary culture and talents through cooking demonstrations, craft workshops and theatrical experiences. This year’s theme is “Savour Singapore in Every Bite”, with highlights including a pop-up restaurant run by Chef Emmanuel Stroobant and Chef Haikal Johari, a theatre and dining experience, and beer yoga.
