Which team will end New York's championship drought?

New York City FC won the MLS Cup in 2021, but with all due respect to the team and its fans, that doesn't count. To channel my inner Mike Francesa, "We ahh nawt doin MLS sawkah today, ahkay?" Translation for those not from New York: "We are not doing MLS soccer today, OK?"

The state of New York has three NFL teams (save your New Jersey comments), two NBA teams, two MLB teams and three NHL teams. Despite that, the city has not been home to a champion since Eli Manning and the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2011.

This is the second-longest drought in New York sports history. It's the longest drought since the early 1900s when New York went from 1906 through 1920 without a championship. It's rough out here. Thankfully, some teams look to be nearing contention. Other teams remain a tire fire. We like it that way here.

Which team is most likely to end New York's championship drought according to the betting odds?

Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets are favorites to win the NBA championship. They have three of the league's best players in Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving. Currently, Irving is only playing road games but maybe he'll decide to get vaccinated or maybe mandates will be relaxed by the playoffs.

The issue with the Nets is that the big three has very rarely been on the court at the same time. Between injuries, load management, vaccine stances and whatever else, you'll usually only see one or two of these guys in any given Nets game.

Despite the fact that their arena has grass growing on the roof, the Nets are +250 to win the NBA championship.

This raises another question for my fellow New Yorkers. If the Nets end our championship drought, does it even count? I've lived here for 27 years and I've never met a Nets fan in the flesh. I've heard they exist, but I can't confirm.

Buffalo Bills

As someone who lives on Long Island, I'm surprised that I remembered that Buffalo is in fact a part of New York and not Canada.

Buffalo is currently +550 to win the Super Bowl, which is the second-best odds to win a championship of any New York team. The Bills looked absolutely dominant in their win over the Patriots in the wild-card round and they have the third-best odds of any team in the playoffs.

If Josh Allen takes care of the ball and makes enough plays, the Bills could theoretically win the Super Bowl. Getting through the Chiefs will be tough, but not out of the question. Buffalo is currently a 2.5-point road underdog in the divisional round against Kansas City.

New York Mets and New York Yankees

If baseball ever figures out their labor dispute, it should be an exciting baseball season for fans of the New York teams.

Both the Yankees and Mets currently sit at 11-to-1 to win the World Series. Those are the third-best odds in the league, behind only the Dodgers and Astros.

The Mets had an active offseason before the lockout, signing the likes of Max Scherzer and Starling Marte. Owner Steve Cohen has shown a willingness to spend.

As for the Yankees, they were not nearly as active but they are the Yankees. They'll find some career minor leaguer and he'll blossom into a 40 home run guy as the Yankees sleepwalk to another 90+ win season.

New York Rangers

It's been a surprising season for the Rangers who find themselves near the top of the NHL standings. Many expected them to compete for a playoff spot, but not many expected them to be this good.

The advanced analytics suggest the Rangers might be nearly as good as the standings say they are, but hey, the game is played on ice and not a spreadsheet. The Rangers are 22-to-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

New York Islanders

If this article came out four months ago, the Islanders would be near the top of this list. The team came within one goal of advancing to the Stanley Cup Final last season, where they would have been a substantial favorite.

The first three months of the NHL season have been a whirlwind, and no team was more impacted than the Islanders. Despite the slow start, the team is playing very well over the last month and has a lot of games in hand on the teams above them. If they sneak into the playoffs, they will be dangerous. The Islanders are 66-to-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

New York Knicks

There's more hope surrounding the Knicks then there was a few years ago, but let's be real with each other and know there's a long way to go here. Julius Randle is a third option on a championship team, and not a lead guy. R.J. Barrett's development has been encouraging, but this team likely needs two high-end players before they can honestly think they're a legitimate contender. The Knicks are 150-to-1 to win the NBA championship.

Buffalo Sabres

One of the worst teams in the NHL, Buffalo is 300-to-1 to win the Stanley Cup. Don't do it. Donate to charity instead.

New York Jets and New York Giants

While there are no odds for the 2023 Super Bowl posted just yet, the Giants and Jets will both likely find themselves near the bottom of that list. If we're relying on the Jets and Giants to break our championship drought, we are in major trouble.
