Woman, 48, dies after falling 7 storeys during maintenance at CapitaSpring: report
SINGAPORE — A 48-year-old Singaporean engineer has died after she fell seven storeys at the building CapitaSpring on Friday (8 April), according to a report by the Straits Times (ST).
The woman stepped on a false ceiling panel while she was doing maintenance work above the 16th floor of the building, the report said.
The panel caved in under her weight, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), according to the report. She fell about 30 metres and landed on the ninth floor, the spokesperson added.
The woman worked for Dragages Singapore, a CapitaSpring spokesperson said, in response to queries from Yahoo News Singapore.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that on Friday at about 10.55am, it received a call for help at 88 Market Street, the address of CapitaSpring. A person was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, it added.
The 280-metre tall building offers premium Grade A office space, a 299-unit Citadines serviced residence managed by The Ascott and retail space, according to CapitaSpring’s website. The first eight floors of the building are dedicated to the serviced residence with a wide range of facilities while the top 29 floors of the tower offer premium office spaces.
MOM said it has ordered Ascott to stop all access to the maintenance level and is investigating the accident.
"As a general safety measure, fragile surfaces should be marked clearly and conspicuously to warn of the risk of falling from height," said the MOM spokesperson, according to the ST report.
The CapitaSpring spokesperson said, “We are saddened by the passing of an employee of our contractor Dragages Singapore due to an incident involving a fall from height in the building on Friday, 8 April 2022. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of our contractor's late employee and we are extending our assistance to the family."
The spokesperson said that workplace safety is of utmost importance and CapitaSpring requires all contractors and vendors to use appropriate equipment and follow safety procedures. CapitaSpring is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations of the incident.
