SINGAPORE — She was entrusted with a client’s credit card to buy luggage for him and instead used it to pay for an outstanding bill of $123,900 that she owed to a night club.

Alina Chan Shu Lin, 37, on Monday (2 September) pleaded guilty to five counts of cheating relating to three different incidents, including cheating involving nearly $400,000 worth of Rolex watches and almost $250,000 in loans.

Another 11 counts of a similar nature were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Chan was an employee with Royal Insignia, a company which produces ceremonial items.

Last year, a client entrusted Chan, a Singaporean, with his credit card for the purpose of purchasing luggage for him. Instead, Chan decided to use the credit card to pay off a tab at Club Armani V6 Disco, which she frequented. She went to the club, located at 100 Jalan Sultan, and paid the bill of $123,900. The payment was processed on 13 September.

Between June and August last year, Chan also lied to the managing director of her company that a client needed to apply for loans. Over six occasions, Chan took loans of $249,200 and spent the money. She has not restituted the sum.

In July last year, Chan went to Emperor Watch and Jewellery, a shop located at The Hilton Shopping Gallery, and placed orders for eight Rolex watches. She lied that the order was placed on behalf of a third party, who was an existing customer of Emperor.

Payment was to be made through credit. The shop delivered the eight watches, worth $398,071.04, to Chan. Chan later pawned all the watches for $245,000 and used the proceeds to pay for personal expenses and debts.

While the watches have been recovered, the pawn shops have not been repaid for the amounts that they extended to Chan.

For each count of cheating, Chan could be jailed up to 10 years and fined. She is expected to be sentenced on 9 September.
