World Championships: Quah Zheng Wen misses out on 200m fly semi-finals

Singapore swimmer Quah Zheng Wen narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot in the 200m butterfly event at the FINA World Championships.

During the heats in Budapest, Hungary, Quah clocked 1 minute 56.76 seconds in his heat. His personal best is 1:56.01, set during the same race during the Olympics last year.

He finished 18th overall out of 44 swimmers. The top 16 swimmers from the heats advance to the semi-finals.

Hungarian Laszlo Cseh was the fastest qualifier in 1:54.08.

“I felt quite strong the whole way through, I feel like I could have gone harder definitely,” admitted Quah.

Earlier in the week, Quah also missed out on a semi-final spot in the 100m backstroke after finishing 18th overall in the heats.

Quah has three more events – the 100m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 50m backstroke.

On Monday night, compatriot Joseph Schooling finished fifth in the 50m butterfly. He had clocked a new Asian and national record in the semi-finals in a time of 22.93s.

He has two more events – the 100m freestyle and his pet event, the 100m butterfly, where he he won the Olympic gold medal in Rio last year.
