World Cup 2022: USA battles England to a scoreless draw; sets up huge match with Iran
Yahoo Sports Nick Bromberg takes you through the United States’ scoreless draw with England in their second match of the Group Stage of the 2022 World Cup. The United States will play Iran in its final match of the Group Stage on Tuesday at 2pm ET.

NICK BROMBERG: It's two games in two ties for the United States at the 2022 World Cup. The US tied England 0-0 in their much-anticipated Group B match-up on Black Friday. While England had the majority of possession, it's not a stretch to say the US was the better team. They created more chances in the attacking third and ended up with 10 shots to England's eight. The best chance for the US came just past the 30-minute mark when Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar. That came about seven minutes after Weston McKennie found himself unmarked in the middle of the penalty box as a cross from Tim Weah fizzled in, but McKinnie's first time shot came nowhere close to the goal.
The draw means the US still hasn't lost to England in three World Cup match ups and the scoreless game is the first time the US has held a European team scoreless in the World Cup since it beat England 1 to 0 in the team's first World Cup match-up in 1950. The tie also isn't a bad result for the United States, especially after Iran beat Wales 2 to 0 earlier in the day. The US was always facing a win-and-in situation against Iran on Tuesday after the tie against Wales.
And a tie means the US doesn't need help to go through to the knockout rounds, as it currently sits in third place on two points. A win would give the US five total points, and even a group win if Wales somehow beats England. If England wins or ties, the US would go through in second place, unless it dominates Iran. But no matter what, the US has to beat Iran to move on. Another tie will not be enough.
