What makes a city “liveable”, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)?

In its 2018 Global Liveability Survey, cities were ranked based on their stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Taking the top spot was the Austrian capital Vienna, with Melbourne in Australia taking second place.

Singapore, which ranked ahead of Hong Kong last year, declined in 2018 to once again fall behind its Asian rival. According to the ranking, the Republic is the world’s 37th most liveable city. Hong Kong rose up the ranking in 2018 to surpass Singapore, rising to 35th – up from 45th in 2017.

According to the EIU’s Simon Baptist, everyday life in Singapore was more affected by censorship than Hong Kong was, and the state of LGBT rights was a negative factor, too.

Do you feel this is a fair assessment? Is Hong Kong really a better place to live, or is Singapore the more “liveable” city? Have your say, and leave a comment below.
