Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) recently announced that, from Monday (12 November), some MRT stations will deploy metal detectors and X-ray scanners at fare gates in a six-month trial of enhanced security measures.

LTA said the additional security checks would be conducted at at maximum of six stations at once. The announcement did not specify which stations would be affected by the trial.

Commenters on the report about the measures were mostly sceptical, with someone calling the checks an “unnecessary hassle”. Another said: “They can’t even get the trains and the escalators to operate efficiently and now they want to treat every station like an airport!”

Do you think the added security checks will lead to unnecessary hassle for MRT commuters? Have your say in our poll and leave a comment below.
